Datalust, the company behind Seq

We are a company of creatives and makers. We don't have a mantra. We don't give our people a corporate demonym. We build tools to help developers understand what their systems are doing and to keep them working.

We believe observability data should stay in the hands of the people building the systems that produce it. Observability data is rich with private information about system and user behavior. We're committed to buiding privacy-centric, self-hosted tooling, because sharing this data with third-parties is not a sensible default for the industry to adopt.

Founding

Datalust was founded in Australia in 2013, by Nicholas and Susan Blumhardt. They'd recently returned from a stint in the USA while Nick worked at Microsoft on the .NET BCL, and decided to apply the platform and tooling knowledge acquired there to solve problems they saw in the software projects around them.

Developers at the time had excellent tools for building software, but few good options for monitoring what they'd built. Seq was made to support the way developers work, focusing on direct access to raw data, instead of the flashy visualizations and canned demos popular in observability marketing.

Since then, Seq has evolved from a niche, Windows-only tool, into a cross-platform clustered observability system used across the globe, but it's always retained its developer DNA.

Team

We work together to build, sell, and support Seq. Each member of our cohesive and long-term team contributes a unique perspective to our work.

The product we ship reflects the shape and values of we who build it. We believe in minimal waste in all forms, in process, in features, in consumption. We value experimentation and aren't afraid of making challenging technical bets.

Funding

Datalust is a profitable company supported by our customers. We don't rely on funds from venture capital, advertising revenue, or data sharing. Ensuring our customers' best interests and our interests are aligned is a core principle we apply when making decisions that shape our company.
